Almost every song I write is an attempt to develop and strengthen a song-writing or musical skill (must be the teacher in me). Being only a passable guitar player, I'll write an entire song focusing on a B minor chord, or incorporate a clarinet lead to shake the cobwebs off my fingers. Likewise, I've developed an interest in the juxtaposition of poetic and standard musical forms (loving a poet perhaps encouraged that little twist in my writing), and have been experimenting along those lines. Fifteen years later, I'm still experimenting with the verses of my first piece, Like Juliet and Romeo... perhaps someday I'll finish it to my satisfaction.
