Some people take pictures of those memorable lifetime moments... I write songs about them. Each song I write is a snapshot of an emotion, event, or reaction I experienced due to the relative insanity of this thing we call life. A former friend of mine told me that no matter how hard she tried, she was unable to tie those events into a cohesive melody and rhythm that reflected the moment. That seems to be my knack.
Almost every song I write is an attempt to develop and strengthen a song-writing or musical skill. Being only a passable guitar player, I'll write an entire song focusing on a B minor chord, or incorporate a clarinet lead to shake the cobwebs off my fingers. Likewise, I've developed an interest in the juxtaposition of poetic and standard musical forms (loving a poet perhaps encouraged that little twist in my writing), and have been experimenting along those lines. Fifteen years later, I'm still experimenting with the verses of my first piece, Like Juliet and Romeo... perhaps someday I'll finish it to my satisfaction.
